Challenge

Despite significant progress, many communities in Rwanda still face challenges related to access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), particularly in schools and healthcare facilities. Limited WASH infrastructure affects infection prevention in health centers, reduces students’ ability to focus on learning, and contributes to school absenteeism among girls due to inadequate menstrual hygiene management facilities.

WaterAid Rwanda, with support from Scottish Water, launched the ALBA Project to strengthen WASH systems and improve health, dignity, and learning environments in communities across Bugesera and Nyamagabe districts.

Approach

Right Venture Creative produced a documentary-style video highlighting the impact of the ALBA Project through real stories from communities, schools, and healthcare facilities.

The production focused on:

  • Documenting new WASH infrastructure installed in healthcare facilities
    • Capturing improved sanitation and hygiene conditions in schools
    • Showcasing reliable water supply solutions including water storage tanks
    • Highlighting menstrual hygiene facilities supporting girls’ education
    • Featuring testimonies from health staff, students, and community members

The video combines field footage, interviews, and environmental storytelling to illustrate how improved WASH services contribute to better health, dignity, and educational outcomes.

Results

The ALBA Project has delivered transformative improvements in WASH access across targeted districts.

Key results highlighted in the video include:

  • Installation of WASH infrastructure in four healthcare facilities, including sanitation systems, placenta pits, laundry, and drying areas to strengthen infection prevention and patient safety.
  • Provision of water storage systems in 50 schools in Bugesera district, ensuring reliable access to clean water for students even during water rationing periods.
  • Construction of improved sanitation facilities and menstrual hygiene management spaces, helping girls stay in school with confidence and dignity while reducing absenteeism.
  • Training of health staff and community facilitators in environmental health promotion and infection prevention, strengthening long-term community hygiene practices.

Building on the success of ALBA I (2017–2022), which improved health and sanitation for over 330,000 people in Nyamagabe district, the ALBA Project continues to transform lives by expanding access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene in schools, healthcare facilities, and communities.
