Challenge

Across Africa, governments and education stakeholders are working to improve the quality and relevance of education systems to better prepare young people for the future. While significant progress has been made in expanding access to basic education, many countries are now focusing on improving teaching and learning outcomes, gender equity, and leadership in schools.

One of the key challenges identified is the strengthening of school leadership systems, as effective leadership plays a crucial role in creating positive learning environments, supporting teachers, managing school resources, and improving student well-being and academic performance.

The African Centre for School Leadership commissioned a documentary to highlight best practices and innovative approaches to school leadership across different African contexts.

Approach

Right Venture Creative produced a documentary exploring school leadership practices across Rwanda, Ghana, and Kenya, capturing real stories from school leaders, educators, and policymakers.

The production focused on:

  • Documenting innovative leadership practices in schools across three African countries
    • Capturing interviews with education experts, school leaders, teachers, and students
    • Showcasing successful initiatives such as leadership communities of practice and professional development programs
    • Highlighting how collaboration between schools, communities, and education authorities strengthens education systems

The documentary combines on-location storytelling, interviews, and observational footage to illustrate how effective leadership transforms schools and improves learning outcomes.

Results

The documentary highlights how strong school leadership can significantly improve teaching and learning environments across Africa.

Key insights featured in the film include:

  • Leadership development programs in Ghana supporting school leaders through professional training and mentorship
    • Innovative school leadership models in Rwanda demonstrating how strong management can improve school performance and sustainability
    • Community engagement strategies in Kenyan schools strengthening partnerships between schools and parents

The film showcases how effective leadership contributes to improved student learning outcomes, better teacher support, stronger school management, and reduced gender and equity gaps in education.

By highlighting these examples, the documentary supports the mission of the African Centre for School Leadership to strengthen school leadership systems across the continent and contribute to better education outcomes for future generations.
